Frankie Vega and Mazi Namvar have known each other for a long time. Vega is a Chicago born figure that’s been active in the city's electronic music scene as a promoter, DJ, and producer since the 90s. Namvar has been at it for decades making music and DJing under various pseudonyms - fans of other Fresh Meat releases have likely heard of his Audio Soul Project guise.
On this release Frankie and Mazi, yes we’re using first names, write two original bangers. Devotion is a raw warehouse thumper, delivering roughly 6 minutes of cinder block kick drums, syncopated hi-hats, rolling snares, distorted skippy chords, and the classic vocal declaring, “I want to give you devotion!” They mean it. This track is fun, but it ain’t no joke. Watch your levels.
The second original cut is Girl I, a bubbly cybernetic house track that evolves from start to finish. The elastic keys, subtle acid lines, pads, and chopped female vocals should get you grinning like the classic acid smiley face. There’s a backstory to this track that tells a tale of galactic disco warfare centered around two robots named Alonia Khan and Luka Lak-e-tronic. The cherries on top of this bumpfest are Tim Vitek’s two badass versions of Devotion. Vitek is a Chicago techno mainstay. He runs his record label Grid Based Beats, works as a mixing and mastering engineer, creates sample packs for Native Instruments, and somehow has still found time to make these versions! With his ‘Remix’, Tim peppers several of the original Devotion elements over his own signature beats, layers in a fresh warbling acid line, and deftly morphs the groove throughout. His ‘Tool’ version is a hypnotic techno jaunt evoking the spirits of King Tubby and Mark Bell’s LFO. This one is for the 5am dancers, still getting down just before the sun comes back up.
